Jacob Lawrence used painting to tell powerful stories about the African-American experience. Coming of age in the Harlem Renaissance, Lawrence crafted powerful series about icons like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman in which text and image are interwoven. His most famous work, The Migration Series, explored the 20th-century exodus of African-Americans from the rural South to the industrial North. And his only series still in private hands, Struggle... From the History of the American People (1954-56) begins with the Revolutionary War and ends with westward expansion in the early 19th century. Struggle… addresses the founding fathers' desire for freedom and the blind spots in their vision.
Lectures on art and art-related topics are offered on a regular basis. Sponsored by the Art Committee.
