The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education will interview three applicants to fill a trustee vacancy at a special board meeting Thursday, July 11 at 6 p.m. KPS board members reviewed nine applications for the trustee position at a special meeting on July 9. While the 9 applicants were not identified during deliberations the 3 selected candidates will be interviewed Thursday, July 11 at 6PM. The community members who will be interviewed and their interview times are: Juanita Yvonne Payton at 6 – Payton is a former KPS teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent of elementary schools. She is involved in numerous community organizations including Delta Sigma Theta sorority, Kalamazoo Links, Family Health Center and Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Bobby Boyd at 6:45 – Boyd is active in several community organizations, including the Metropolitan Kalamazoo Branch of the NAACP, the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, and Southwest Michigan First. He is a Kalamazoo native with extensive experience across private, public, local, and federal sectors. Alicia Swift at 7:30 – Swift works for the State of Michigan and has a background in public health. She has held leadership roles in several community organizations including Rootead Enrichment Center, the Northside Association for Community Development and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The appointee will fill the seat vacated by trustee Jermaine Jackson, who resigned on June 13. The person assigned to his position will serve through December 2024. Trustee candidate interviews will be broadcast LIVE Thursday, July 11 at 6pm in another Special meeting.
