May 4th, 2021 - Exeter Historical Society Lecture Series What are your choices if you don’t like the policies or politics of your community? What can you do if those in power seek to silence you? The founding of seventeenth-century Exeter gives us a window through which to examine these questions. As a religious nonconformist, John Wheelwright moved his family several times in response to pressure from those in power. This talk, by UNH history professor Cynthia Van Zandt, explores the choice of leaving and starting again elsewhere as an act of political dissent and considers the ways English political dissent fueled the creation of new towns and the expansion of English colonialism throughout New England, including in New Hampshire.
