Women’s voting rights, racial justice, evolution, sex, censorship, and blasphemy laws were all issues inciting what some called Holy Wars in America’s early history. Freethinkers suffered some serious setbacks in those battles, due to WWI and the rise of anarchism. But because most religious institutions were largely on the wrong side of cultural issues, history would ultimately keep them in check.
