Isaiah shares how his Christian beliefs shape his approach to practicing law. For him, the profession is more than a career; it is an opportunity to serve others and reflect God’s character through integrity and ethical conduct.
In this insightful episode of The Vision, hosts Dr. Alveda King, Ginger Howard, Day Gardner, and Destiny Yarbrough welcome attorney Isaiah Delemar for a thoughtful discussion about how Christian faith has influenced the development of the American justice system. The conversation begins with the hosts reflecting on the historical foundations of the United States and the role that Judeo-Christian principles have played in shaping legal structures and civic life. Isaiah explains that although the legal system has evolved over time, the core framework of American law—an adversarial process in which opposing sides present evidence before an impartial judge or jury—reflects enduring principles of fairness, accountability, and the pursuit of truth. Isaiah shares how his Christian beliefs shape his approach to practicing law. For him, the profession is more than a career; it is an opportunity to serve others and reflect God’s character through integrity and ethical conduct. Attorneys are trained to examine arguments from multiple perspectives, yet they also have the freedom to choose clients and causes that align with their convictions. By doing so, lawyers can influence society in meaningful ways. The hosts discuss how Christians must learn to balance obedience to God with respect for civil authority, referencing Christ’s teaching to “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what is God’s.” Living with integrity in financial dealings, contracts, and professional relationships allows believers to demonstrate their faith through daily actions. The conversation turns to the biblical relationship between righteousness and justice. Dr. King references the well-known verse from the book of Amos declaring that righteousness should flow like waters and justice like a mighty stream. Isaiah explains that the ultimate example of these principles working together is found at the cross of Jesus Christ. At the cross, God’s justice required payment for sin, yet His mercy provided redemption through Christ’s sacrifice. In this moment, justice and mercy were perfectly reconciled. Ideally, earthly justice systems strive for a similar balance—holding wrongdoing accountable while seeking restoration whenever possible. The hosts also address the ethical dilemmas lawyers sometimes face, including the challenge of defending individuals who may have committed serious wrongdoing. Isaiah explains that the legal system depends on proper representation so that truth can emerge through due process. He compares this role to the biblical concept of Christ as an advocate for humanity. Scripture teaches that all people fall short of God’s standard, yet believers have an advocate in Jesus Christ who intercedes on their behalf. Likewise, attorneys ensure that every person receives fair treatment under the law. Another important theme in the discussion is the difference between what is legal and what is morally right. Isaiah explains that Christians are called to a higher standard than simply following the letter of the law. In one example, he describes a family inheritance dispute where the law granted full ownership of property to one heir, even though the property had originally been intended for two relatives. Although the law permitted the sole heir to keep the entire property, Isaiah encouraged the family to pursue reconciliation and fairness rather than strictly asserting legal rights. True justice, he suggests, often requires moral wisdom in addition to legal knowledge. As the program concludes, the hosts reflect on the ultimate authority of God over all human institutions. Isaiah explains that while governments and legal systems may be imperfect, they operate under the sovereignty of Christ, who Scripture describes as the one upon whose shoulders government ultimately rests. Christians are therefore called to pursue justice, live with integrity, and trust that God remains the final judge over all human affairs.
