The 1938 Hurricane was one of the deadliest tropical cyclones to hit the North East, damaging much of the east coast but also hitting communities further inland. Exeter suffered many falling trees. Many elm trees, a staple of downtown streets planted in the 1850's, were toppled by high winds.
