Kalamazoo County Government hosted an educational panel discussion on data centers and battery energy storage systems (BESS) on Thursday, June 25, 2026. As data centers and battery energy storage systems continue to spark discussion in communities across Michigan and throughout the country, the event was intended to provide residents with factual, balanced information from subject-matter experts. The educational panel explored topics such as public health, energy and water use, land use, economic development, energy infrastructure, and other community considerations associated with these technologies. “People are hearing more about data centers and battery energy storage systems, but many are still looking for clear, reliable information about what these technologies are and how they may affect communities,” said Taylor Van Winkle, Climate Sustainability Manager. “We created this panel to bring together experts with different perspectives and areas of expertise so residents can explore the questions, opportunities, and concerns surrounding these technologies in an educational setting.”
